On 27 August 1944,
just under a year
after the formation
of the GWU itself,
the union organised
a rally for young
workers and on that
that day the Young
Workers Movement was
launched. The first
Executive Committee
meeting was held on
May 11, 1945.
Over the years, the
Young Workers
Movement grew in its
importance within
the folds of the GWU
and ever since it
has gained to seats
on the Union's
National council.
It is worth
mentioning that from
the Youth Movement
emerged not only
most of the union
leaders, but also
prominent
politicians. In fact
one of its first
female members,
Agatha Barbara, was
in her later years,
after serving for
many years in
various ministerial
posts, appointed the
first female
President of the
Republic of Malta.
The section is very
active in the
international sphere
and it has been
elected, for many
years, a member of
the Executive
Committee of the
European Trade Union
Confederation's
Youth Section.
Since 1999, when the
union was undergoing
a restructuring
process, the Youth
Movement became
known as the Youth
Section, to reach
not only young
workers but also
students from all
education levels.
All GWU members
whom age conforms to
the National
Politics and to
the Politics about
the youths in the
European Trade
Unions
Confederation (ETUC) is
automatically member
of the GWU
Youths. Students,
Part Timers and
Unemployed can apply
for direct
membership with the
Youth Section. |
